From board games and theme parks to national academic recognition, JC/LISD Academy student Tony Grudnoski has quite the story to tell!

Tony was recently named a Commended Student in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, joining approximately 34,000 students nationwide to receive this honor.

Tony shares his relief that his hard work and preparation paid off.

Tony also recalls his middle school English teacher, Mrs. Smith, who provided advanced reading opportunities, including Frankenstein. Originally from Britton-Deerfield, Tony chose JC/LISD Academy for additional academic opportunities.

By graduation, he expects to earn approximately 70 college credits, complete his Michigan Transfer Agreement and receive both an Associate of Science and an Associate of Arts degree.

Today at the LISD TECH Center, students got a firsthand look at the challenges of managing money, making tough decisions and handling the unexpected during our Poverty Simulation.

Led by Julie Burkeen and Samantha Berger from LISD Professional Learning, this hands-on experience helps students better understand the realities families may face, the importance of budgeting and the community resources available when life gets difficult.

Congratulations to Michelle Bowman, October’s Barry the Bear Award recipient!

Michelle was nominated by a fellow teacher who shared how often she turns to Michelle for new ideas, guidance and feedback when it comes to PBIS. She also highlighted Michelle’s willingness to share what works in her classroom so others can use and adapt those strategies with their own students.
