Adrian, MI – For the first time in school history, the JC/LISD Academy brought a full theatrical production to the stage this winter—sparking the beginning of a drama program that has quickly become a place of belonging, creativity, and confidence for students.
Under the leadership of Brandi Archer, JC/LISD Academy Forensics, Performing Arts, and Play Director, the Academy’s inaugural production, And Then There Was One, premiered in January 2025 and drew over 120 audience members across three performances. The play featured student actors, technical crew, and volunteers, who transformed classrooms into a full performance space—designing and building their own set, collecting costumes and props, and incorporating dozens of sound effects to elevate the experience. The show proved to be a transformative opportunity for students, many of whom had never participated in a performing arts program before.
“We wanted to create something for students who hadn’t found their place yet—and theatre welcomed everyone,” said Archer. “The students didn’t just put on a play. They found confidence, made connections, and discovered they had something powerful to say.”
Following the success of the winter show, the JC/LISD Academy is now preparing to host its second production of the school year: Coffee, Cakes & Comedy. This interactive showcase will feature original student-written sketches, improv performances, and a café-style experience where guests are served refreshments by the cast. Audience participation will be encouraged, with “scenes from a hat” inspired by guest submissions.
Coffee, Cakes & Comedy takes place on Saturday, May 24 at 2 p.m. at the LISD TECH Center. Admission is by donation, with a suggested contribution of $10 to support future theatre programming.
