SCECHs (State Continuing Education Clock Hours)

What are SCECHs?

State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs) are State Board approved in-service, workshop, training, or conference credits that are used for the renewal of selected certificates issued by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and for meeting the continuing education requirement for school administrators.

MDE's Educator Certification Renewal page

Please note: SCECHs cannot be “banked” for future use. They must be used within the certification renewal time frame in which they were earned.

How Do I Earn SCECHs?

SCECHs can be earned by attending a training/workshop that offers SCECH credit. At the training/workshop, complete the provided SCECH Registration Form and always be sure to sign in. The information will then be uploaded to the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS) by the SCECH Sponsor and you will receive an automatically-generated evaluation from MOECS that must be completed before you are awarded the credit. If you do not receive an evaluation email notification within 20 days, check your MOECS account.

Don’t Forget! PIC Numbers are Required to Register for SCECHs!

Can My District/Building Offer SCECHs for On-Site PD?

Yes! If districts/buildings are offering professional learning lasting at least 15 minutes, those hours can be uploaded by your local coordinator as DPPD.  Please contact your local SCECH Coordinator to work through the process to count these hours.  If you do not know who your SCECH Coordinator is, please contact Julie Burkeen.

Earning SCECHs from Non-Traditional Activities

Educators are able to earn hour-for-hour SCECHs by participating in the opportunities listed below.  If you have completed SCECHs for these activities in the past, the process changed on July 1, 2020.  At this time, you will need to complete a log of time spent and/or sign in sheets to receive SCECH credit.  One hour of work in the activities below counts for one SCECH hour.  There is no limit to how many times you can count these activities in each renewal period, as was previously the case.

Your local SCECH Coordinator will upload these hours for you.  They are not sent the LISD to be uploaded unless you are employed by the LISD.

Please contact Julie Burkeen  or Kirsten Stiver  with further questions regarding externships.

SCECHs vs CEUs

Generic CEUs cannot be used toward the renewal of the aforementioned certificates nor do they meet administrative continuing education requirements. Only state approved “SCECHs” are allowed.
