David Hillard graduated from Ferris State University with an Associate’s degree in Building Technology and a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management. Aside from being the former teacher assistant in the Building Trades program, he has also taught the Adult Learning Home Maintenance class during the winter. Prior to working at the TECH Center, David worked for Waltz Carpentry where he specialized in remodeling, new home construction, and pole barn construction. His love for construction began in high school when he would work summers remodeling homes with his wood shop teacher.
Residential Construction
Residential Construction is a limited enrollment program for approved second-year students. The program usually rebuilds and remodels a home for Habitat for Humanity. From September 2014 through May 2016 students were involved in building the Sustainable Energy Efficient Demonstration (SEED) house on the LISD Center for a Sustainable Future campus. By building and remodeling a house, students learn “on-the-job” while getting great satisfaction from a job well done!
Program Description
Students learn at the work site to complete all aspects of construction. In this second year course, students work in teams on various projects including demolition, framing, foundation support, drywall installation, flooring, electrical, plumbing, installation of doors and cabinets, HVACR, and more.
To Be Successful
Students first must have successfully completed Building Trades/Construction Careers and be recommended for the onsite Residential Construction program. Students who are most successful in this program have mathematical skills in measuring, fractions, and decimals. Students should possess good work habits, like to work with their hands, follow directions, work well independently or as a team, and enjoy building and creating.

Teacher Assistant
Matthew Hodges is a graduate of the LISD TECH Center’s Residential Construction program. He began working as the teacher assistant for Residential Construction directly out of high school. Matt has 10 years of experience working at the LISD TECH Center, as well as experience working around Lenawee County and surrounding areas. He is currently pursuing his Michigan Builder’s license and his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Management degree.
