Milton C. Porter Education CenterSpecial Education Services

Age:  Birth to 5 Years

 

 

The Lenawee Intermediate School District (LISD) provides free special education services to eligible young children. 

 

A request for a special education evaluation and services may be made by the child’s parent, physician, or a community agency. 

 

Infant & Toddler Services - Evaluations and ongoing special education therapy services for infants and toddlers are in the child’s natural environment.  In addition to working with the child, a therapist will teach the child’s parents or childcare provider techniques and activities.

 

Toddler Group Services – This special education service is for children ages 18 months to 3 years of age.  Toddler group meets two times a week.  Children and parents work with a team of therapists.  Parents may also choose to participate in a parent support group.

 

Preschool Services – Special education preschool services for children ages 3 - 5 years are provided at different sites in Lenawee County .  A child may receive therapy services at their elementary school or preschool and/or attend a LISD special education preschool classroom.  The LISD preschool classrooms are currently located in Adrian, Tipton, and at the Milton C. Porter Education Center .  Children may attend half day sessions, four days per week.  Free transportation is provided.

Vo-TechLISD PREP Academy Childcare

Age:  2 weeks - 5 years

 

LISD PREP Academy program offers free licensed childcare services for teen parents through a LISD partnership with Lenawee County public schools. 

 

The LISD PREP Academy located in the Telamon building on the LISD VO-TECH Center campus is an alternative high school for pregnant and parenting teens.  It offers high school completion, parenting support, and on-site licensed childcare. 

 

In order to enroll in the LISD PREP Academy and its child care services the teen parent needs to be:

 

·         A resident of Lenawee County schools

·         Under age 20 by September 1st

·         Pregnant or a custodial parent

·         The child needs a medical release to attend child care.

Milton C. Porter Education CenterEarly On

Age:  Birth to 3 Years

 

 

 

Early On is a statewide system for coordinating programs and services for families of children birth to 3 years when there are concerns about the health or development of their infant or toddler.  Lenawee County's Early On services are based at the Milton C. Porter Education Center and may include services offered by LISD special education, Lenawee's CHILD, Lenawee County Public Health Department, and other agencies.

 

Early On services are available to families for free regardless of income.  Services include screening, evaluation, and service coordination.  Services can be provided in the home, daycare setting, or in various playgroups.

 

Services available through Early On:

·         Service coordination

·         Speech & language therapy

·         Occupational therapy

·         Physical therapy

·         Counseling

·         Vision & Hearing services

·         Family Training in Developmental Activities

·         Contact with Other Parents and Community Resources

Vo-TechPreschool

VO-TECH center Preschool

Age:  2-½ through 5 years

  

Children ages 2-½ through 5 years may be eligible to attend the LISD VO-TECH Center preschool program. 

The program has morning and afternoon sessions that meet Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during the school year.

 

The LISD VO-TECH Center preschool program is supervised by licensed childcare providers with the assistance of high school students who are enrolled in the LISD

VO-TECH Center Careers in Early Childhood Development class.  There is a cost for this preschool program.

 

This preschool program provides:

·         Experiences for a child’s physical, social, emotional and  

          intellectual growth

·         Active play balanced with calming activities to prevent  

          fatigue and over-stimulation

·         Learning that supports appropriate choices and decision-
